You can get a converter to convert three to single phase or whatever is the regular residential phase. I've done this with a 5 hp motor hooked to a bread-dough mixer (a ribbon mixer), which is great for mixing dry materials.
Three phase is more common in farming areas; it's cheaper to run large elec. motors on three phase.
